Bio

I live in Cape Town, my adopted city, where I have fabricated a life for myself first in textile design, now in ceramics.
I make hand-built sculptural vessels and plates in earthenware clay. Earthenware is a primeval, ageless material that carries ancient social and natural significance in its very grains.

My primary way of thinking is drawing; it has been so throughout my life. Ceramics provide a foundation with its own layers of meaning and function to my drawing and colour explorations. I use multiple layers and combinations of glazes, underglazes, and oxides. My glazing techniques range from optimistically experimental to strictly old-school; from wildly emotional to calculated, austere precision.

My African environment – urban, wild, real, imagined, mythological, terrifying, splendid, ordinary – is my inspiration always. Even when, perhaps especially when, it appears least in evidence.
