EBONY/CURATED made its debut at The Armory Show in September 2026 with a five-artist presentation bringing together diverse approaches to painting, textile and ceramics from across the African continent.
Featuring works by Hugh Byrne, Wole Lagunju, Kimathi Mafafo, Senzeni Marasela and Lisa Ringwood, the presentation offered a considered dialogue between distinct artistic practices, material explorations and approaches to image-making.
The booth was subsequently recognised by Artsy as one of the ten notable presentations at the fair. In her feature, writer Katie White highlighted the breadth of work on view, including Lagunju’s Homage to Eshumare (2026), an oil painting informed by Yoruba iconography; Mafafo’s hand- and machine-stitched embroideries; and Marasela’s Waiting for Gebane 1, part of her ongoing exploration of a fictional alter ego situated within South African history.
Ringwood’s hand-built ceramic vessels also drew considerable attention. Distinguished by their delicate forms and intricate sgraffito surfaces, the works were particularly well received, with six pieces placed on the opening day of the fair.
The recognition by Artsy marks a significant moment for EBONY/CURATED’s debut at one of the international art world’s leading fairs, highlighting the range of practices and perspectives presented through its programme.
